Meet Jason – Riverlea’s Everyday Hero

If you've ever wondered what community spirit looks like in action, look no further than Riverlea resident Jason, a devoted father, committee member, and volunteer firefighter who's helping shape Riverlea into a safer, stronger, and more connected place to live.

Jason, his partner, and their two foster children were among the first to move into Riverlea’s Stage 1 nearly two years ago. With a strong belief in creating a welcoming environment, he quickly became involved with both the Riverlea Voice Committee and the Country Fire Service (CFS). For Jason, it was simple, “with Riverlea being such a new community, I saw it as a great opportunity to meet people and help build something special from the ground up.”

As a key member of the Riverlea Voice Committee, Jason is on a mission to rekindle the sense of neighbourhood many of us grew up with, where kids rode bikes together, neighbours looked out for one another, and everyone felt like they belonged. “That old-school community feel is missing in many places today and we’re working hard to bring this to Riverlea” Jason says.

One initiative he’s especially proud of is the Make-A-Wish Quiz Night, which raised over $10,000 in 2025 to support critically ill children. “It’s not just about events, it’s about building a culture of care and kindness.”

Outside of committee work, Jason also serves as a volunteer firefighter with the Virginia CFS Brigade. His journey with the CFS began during a local recruitment drive. “I was shocked to learn the MFS doesn’t cover Riverlea.” he recalls. Since joining, Jason has responded to everything from fires to fallen trees and car accidents, all while educating kids at community events. “The more volunteers we have, the safer our community becomes.”

When asked about Riverlea’s biggest strength, Jason is quick to credit Walker Corporation. “They’re not just selling homes; they’re building a community. Without their support, the Riverlea Voice Committee wouldn't even exist.”

For those thinking about getting more involved, Jason has just three words of advice: “Just do it!” Whether it's attending a committee meeting or popping into a Monday night CFS training session, there’s always room for more hands.
